The Woodland Walk

The woodland walk, with its woodchipped path, is being managed similar to a coppice.

An ancient system of woodland management, coppicing was traditionally used to provide a regular supply of timber and firewood.

Trees in coppiced woods are cut close to the ground at regular stages. This results in lots of new stems that grow back quickly, in the form of long poles. These would have been used for building, fencing and in gardens for training climbing plants.

We use coppicing in this area to create a range of habitats for plants and wildlife – increasing the diversity of species that thrive here. It improves the health and biodiversity of a woodland area by opening it up to the sunlight and allowing a wider range of plants to flourish. 

The coppiced wood doesn’t go to waste - we sometimes use it to make fences and stakes for hedge laying.
